Iron's useful too. Iron's the closest tier of tools too diamonds,and you can find huge amounts of them to because they are so common. And on MineCraft,iron's used in most middle&endgame crafting recipes. But out of the choices,I'll chose gold so I can get enchanted golden apples,because iron's close enough to diamonds for me. :) The major difference is durribility though.

Gold it is weaker for armor but its used for lots of potions and golden apples
